My sister and I are headed to the UK for a conference. The intensity of preparing for this trip has been a full time job, on top of the jobs we already do — booking meetings, booking locations for those meetings from afar, emails upon emails with personal assistants (who make me long for my own wonder-human to organize my calendar!)…all for some mysterious, hoped for YES that will come in the midst of many NOs.
In the course on coaching and mentorship that I’m currently teaching we have recently discussed the GROW model. It is made up of four components:
Riffing on this model I am looking to London with the recognition that I need to be my own hype-person. I need to be my own coach and mentor in this short time of preparation before jumping off the boat into unchartered waters in search of my difficult white whale. So here’s to literature and the internet for inspiration — if you have any memes or quotations to share I’m here for them.
I’ll start here with a GOAL: Make it out alive!
The REALITY is I’m ready. I’ve prepared. I’ve done the work!
3. I’ve got to embrace the OPTIONS ahead of me — whatever path I take (using google maps to make my way through unfamiliar streets) will get me there.
4. The WILL to do this work is mine but the WAY FORWARD (an alternative W) happens with
. I am not alone.(We won’t be laughing like this on our way to the BBC office having just landed two hours earlier after six hours on a night flight…but goals, yes!?)
GROW model activated! Ahab’s got nothing on me…though it was Ishmael who lived in the end…
I’ll keep pondering my literary life coaches on the plane.
Cheers!
